Careers in Oncology Clinical Research

A clinical trial is the application of the scientific method to human health. Researchers use clinical trials to test hypotheses about the effect of a particular intervention upon a pathological disease condition. Clinical Research Organisations (CROs’) work with companies that are seeking approval for new products.

Typically CROs’ will partner with pharmaceutical, biotechnology or medical device manufacturers. Affinity work with one of the UK's leading Cancer CRO's, Nexus Oncology.

The following are just a number of career possibilities within this sector:

Clinical Project Managers have the responsibility of coordinating site selection and managing the set up process; they will also be responsible for monitoring visits, sponsor meetings, team training and continued compliance assessment. Project Mangers will represent the organisation at meetings with potential and existing clients and work closely with senior management to ensure the ongoing success of the organisation.

Clinical Trial Administrators (CTA's) work closely with Project Mangers and are responsible for the coordination of meetings between sponsors and project teams and the setting up tracking tools for site selection. They will also act as the contact for sponsors and investigator sites in the absence of the Project Manager.

Clinical Research Associates (CRA’s) are responsible for site selection activities, and the monitoring of study sites. They are also responsible for the monitoring of patient recruitment timelines, ethics and submissions, writing and reviewing protocols and general team and sponsor meeting activities.
